Commentary: Reconciling Differences Between Podiatric and Orthopaedic Surgeons in the United Kingdom
This article is a commentary that outlines the historical tensions between podiatric and orthopaedic surgeons in the UK while acknowledging similar experiences in Australia and America. These tensions centre on overlapping scope, differing training pathways, and professional regulation. The recent 2024 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Royal College of Podiatry and the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society represents a significant step towards collaboration, recognising shared goals and remaining points of divergence.
Though most directly relevant to podiatric surgeons, the article contributes to broader conversations about professional recognition, regulation, and collaborative care within allied health.
Key areas of agreement include joint research efforts, the development of a national surgical registry, and the potential for shared training—conditional on regulatory equivalence. The MoU also affirms podiatric surgeons’ independent role in surgical care, prescribing, and post-operative management.
While disagreements remain—particularly around title use and regulatory oversight—the commentary suggests the MoU reflects progress in bridging historical divides.

Benign neoplasia are regularly encountered by podiatrists, and understanding how to classify, diagnose and manage them is important. And whilst malignancies are much rarer, it is crucial for podiatrists to have an awareness of some of the life-threatening conditions that can affect the foot and lower leg.
